If your car has broken down while driving, then you are probably going to need a tow to the nearest auto repair shop. Waiting for a tow truck isn't always safe, but it is necessary if you want to get back on the road. That's why it's important to follow these four safety tips while waiting:

  1. Don't Move Your Car After an Accident: If you have been involved in a collision, don't attempt to move your vehicle from the scene until the police have arrived. The police will want to investigate the situation, which is important when it comes to filing your insurance claim later on. However, it's also not safe to move the car on your own anyway, especially if you are on a major highway. The only time you should move your vehicle is if it is safe to do so and if it's not an accident involving other vehicles.
  2. Keep Yourself on the Side of the Road: The most important thing is keeping yourself off of the road. You should be waiting on the side of the road so that you are not hit by other cars driving through. However, even if you are able to get your car to the side of the road, you should not wait inside of it, since your car may be hit by other cars driving by. You also should not wait by standing in front or back of the vehicle. If the vehicle is hit, your vehicle can, in turn, hit you. It's best to distance yourself, and if you feel unsafe because it's dark, then the police can always wait with you.
  3. Keep the Hazard Lights On: Keeping the hazard lights on is also important to ensure that the vehicle is less likely to be hit while you are waiting for a tow truck. This is going to make the vehicle noticeable to others who are driving by.
  4. Choose the Right Tow Company: Finally, when you are choosing a tow company to help you out, you want to choose a company that can provide a jump start or a change of tire if that is all you really need instead of a tow. This way, you can get back on the road instead of potentially being stuck at an auto repair shop waiting for your car to be fixed.

When you consider these four safety tips, you can be sure that you end up dealing with a safe situation.
